One of the obstacles to the wide scale use of renewable energy is the fact that it is not always available.
Solar is obviously dependent on the sun shining, wind requires wind and while hydroelectric is fairly steady, it isn't available everywhere.
So part of any solution is storing energy when it is abundant and using it when not.
One solution would be to use current non-renewable sources to supplement renewable, but that isn't a good solution since it maintains greenhouse gas emissions.
Storage in batteries is simply not efficient enough and we need to find natural solutions.
One promising technology is compressed air energy. This article details how it may work out west.
Compressed Air Storage
This is an innovative solution that along with others need to be developed as part of our power infrastructure.
