Today we honor the people who served and survived the experience. They all gave up some period of their lives to serve this country.
The idea of serving the country is a good one. Military service is clearly not for everyone but some form of mandatory service could go a long way to unifying this country.
Providing young people an opportunity to be productive, possible in exchange for college or trade training would allow them to get out of their comfort zones. It would also make them engage with people different then them on an equal basis.
Assuming they could be used productively the country would benefit and so would they.
Its been proposed before and is alsmost certainly not going to happen.
Pity.
