Suppose you were faced with the following dilemma, sell a product you knew to be harmful and make a tremendous amount of money or reveal the dangers of that product and get a clean conscience but no money?
Its a decision many people face, in some part every day. Even within legal rules people sell dangerous products that everyone knows can do damage, such as tobacco, alcohol, lottery tickets, to assure a source of income.
Others sell illegal products and of course take high risk.
Some of the richest among us mad money selling things like Opioids or Media lies.
At times the person selling the product might not be aware of how dangerous it is, but most of those doing the selling do know, or at least should know.
If you own a bodega or a deli and have cigarettes, beer and lottery tickets for your customers, you may feel like you have to since they can simply go to the next store instead of yours. They are opting for survival instead of morality and I think everyone can understand that.
What about media or social media sites that cater to audiences by peddling lies?
Censorship is not desirable but rampant misinformation is dangerous.
